JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Utility bills could be increasing under a new bill that is heading for Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe’s desk.

Our partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the bill passed with bipartisan support Thursday. Senate Bill 4, sponsored by Missouri State Sen. Mike Cierport (R-Jackson County), would allow utility companies to set rates based on future projected costs and revenues rather than actual costs.

While supporters argue this approach may provide a more accurate reflection of the financial needs of utility companies, critics worry it could lead to higher rates based on uncertain forecasts.

The Consumers Council of Missouri says Ameren Electric, Spire Gas and Missouri American Water customers could see their utility bills go up at least $1,100 annually under the bill.
