MAPLEWOOD, Mo. – Some Walmart customers turned to Reddit earlier this week with concerns over closed self-checkout lanes at the Maplewood location in St. Louis County.

This follows a decision earlier this year in which Walmart removed self-checkout lanes from one nearby store in Shrewsbury. Ahead of that change, the company expressed optimism that removing the self-checkout lanes would improve the overall shopping experience. Unlike the Shrewsbury store, however, the lanes have not been removed.

Seeking clarification, FOX 2 reached out to Walmart’s corporate affairs team for answers. A spokesperson implies that there have been some adjustments to self-checkout availability at the store, though not on a permanent basis.

The spokesperson released this statement regarding self-checkout availability at the Maplewood store:

“From time-to-time, our stores adjust the use of staffed checkouts and self-checkouts. For example, a store might start or end the day with staffed checkouts. As the number of shoppers and associate staffing increases, these stores open self-checkout registers to manage the increased customer flow. This process isn’t new.

During these times of limited access, some stores are designating select self-checkout stations for Walmart+ customers using our Scan and Go service and Spark drivers for quicker access and delivery services. This decision is intended to better manage checkout availability.”

It’s unclear whether this procedure is in effect for other Walmart locations around the St. Louis region.

Walmart isn’t the only retailer that has adjusted its self-checkout procedures of recent either with local grocer Schnucks changing its policies earlier this year to restrict self-checkout purchases to 10 or fewer items.
