HOUSTON, Tx. – Three people died Monday when Hurricane Beryl made landfall in south Texas and millions more are without power.

Rain pelted the area as wind speeds reached around 90 mph.

“We’re in an emergency. We’re in a rescue mode,” Houston Mayor John Whitmire said. “We’re literally getting calls across Houston right now asking for first responders to come rescue individuals in desperate life-safety conditions.”

As of Monday, the Houston Police Department has rescued at least eight people due to the flooding in the area.

The storm was downgraded to a tropical storm late Monday as it moved inland, but there are still threats of severe weather as several tornado watches are in place for Texas and surrounding states.

Multiple tornadoes have already been reported in East Texas and Oklahoma.

“The White House has reached out to us, offering assistance,” Whitmire said. “It’s all hands on deck.”

Tropical Storm Beryl will now be passing through Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
