ST. LOUIS – The wife of a fallen retired St. Louis Metropolitan Police captain is carrying out the legacy of her husband.

Ann Dorn, the founder and president of the Captain David Dorn Foundation, is providing equipment and training to fire and police departments throughout Missouri.

The support is Ann’s way of honoring David Dorn. In June of 2020, during the unrest from the George Floyd tragedy, the retired Moline Acres Police Chief and St. Louis Metropolitan Police Captain was shot and killed. Dorn was providing security for a friend’s business in north St. Louis.

“It’s my honor to be able to give these things to them. Dave took care of all of his officers, and I want to make sure that officers that can’t afford or get what they need–that we make sure that they have it,” she said.

Dorn, a retired law enforcement officer herself, knows the struggles first responders face these days.

The foundation, which is 100% donation based, has distributed equipment bags containing key supplies, including goggles, flashlights, personal tourniquets, first aid kits, and ear muffs. All of that would cost nearly $400, and often times, those costs come out of pocket for first responders, especially in smaller, rural communities.

The Byrnes Mill Police Department in Jefferson County is among nearly three dozen Missouri departments that have received support from the foundation, thanks to Dorn and retired SLMPD Sgt. Gary Foster.

“I believe like eight or 10 bags, full of safety bags for each individual officer here, it was awesome,” Byrnes Mill Police Chief Frank Selvaggio said. “Our smaller police departments these days, our budgets keep getting cut, every year. It gets harder and harder to supply equipment for officers. Ann and Gary came in with this idea that they started.”

The Captain David Dorn Foundation’s greatest fundraiser, a trivia night, is coming up in April. For more information, click here
