ST. LOUIS — A second, more significant round of winter weather is set to move into the St. Louis area late Tuesday afternoon, bringing heavy snow and dangerously cold temperatures.
Light snowfall overnight left behind up to 1.5 inches across the region, with flurries expected to continue through mid-afternoon. However, the main event will begin between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in southwestern Missouri, reaching the metro area between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The heaviest snow will fall in the evening, tapering off after midnight.
Total snowfall amounts remain in line with earlier forecasts, with more than 3 inches expected in St. Louis County and 6 or more inches likely in areas south of I-70, including Jefferson and Franklin counties. The highest totals—ranging from 9 to 12 inches—are expected from Rolla to Farmington.
In addition to snow, bitterly cold air will grip the region, with temperatures dropping to near or below zero Wednesday and Thursday nights. Wind chills could reach as low as -10 to -20 degrees at times.
Travel is expected to be hazardous, particularly during the evening rush hour. Drivers are urged to use caution and prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility.
