ST. LOUIS – With the recent warm-up comes the creation of potholes.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is working to get ahead of them during this warm spell.

When it’s 32 degrees or below, water freezes and expands, exerting pressure on the pavement. As the temperatures rise and water melts, the soil beneath contracts, leaving voids beneath the pavement.

When the pavement caves in, the result is a pothole.

Drivers can report potholes to MoDOT on its Road Concern page. You can also contact them by phone at 888-ASK-MODOT.
