Authorities said the pedestrians were walking along the street near West Florissant, where piles of ice and slush from recent storms had not been cleared but were pushed to the side. Investigators believe this may have been why the young woman and child were walking on the streets parallel to the iced sidewalks.

The vehicle also struck a nearby house, but structural damage was minimal, and a building inspector was called to the scene.

The road was reopened just after 4 p.m.
