ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – An adult woman is facing felony charges after depositing a stolen check over $37,000 from her mother who has dementia, according to court records.

Documents say Sheila Kovac (age not provided) visited the home of her mother on Feb. 11 after it had been sold. Her mother was moving to a nursing home due to suffering from dementia.

Kovac is accused of stealing the check worth $37,384.47 from the home without permission.

That same day, Kovac went to a BMO Harris Bank, signed the check with her mother’s name, and deposited it. Records state that the bank account used for the check was made online under both her mother and daughter’s information.

A police report was filed by Kovac’s nephew, who is the power of attorney for Kovac’s mother. After being arrested, Kovac admitted to creating the bank account with her mother and daughter’s information as well as depositing the check.

Kovac is charged with one count of stealing $25,000 or more and one count of forgery. She is being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
