ST. LOUIS – Early morning thunderstorms are here and the chance of storms will be with us through the day Tuesday as a cold front moves across the area.
Our morning storms have been sub-severe but have been producing a lot of lightning and likely some small hail in spots. Additional storms to our west Tuesday morning have been severe in spots but are expected to lose strength moving east. As the front continues south, additional waves of thunderstorms will be possible. Some storms could be strong to severe, mainly south and southeast of metro St. Louis.
The threat of flash flooding is low since these storms are expected to be scattered, but anytime you are under a storm cell, you could see locally heavy downpours.
The front settles and stalls to our south overnight, briefly taking the rain threat south with it. But that boundary begins to lift back to the north as a warm front overnight. That will once again provide the firing line for rain and storms starting around daybreak Wednesday.
Rounds of rain and storms will continue Wednesday and Thursday with a low chance of strong storms at times. A cold front Thursday night should clear us out for a time.
The weather is expected to cool down into Friday, but we are keeping an eye out for a secondary cold front that could potentially trigger scattered showers and a few storms on Friday afternoon. The front will bring a push of cooler air for the weekend.
