ST. LOUIS – Goats are on the go around fields in the St. Louis Metro area.

The Metro West Fire Protection District in St. Louis County posted a video to Facebook Tuesday showing 50 goats hard at work. Any driver or resident passing by has likely shared the thought: What are goats doing out here?

Goats On The Go is a growing country-wide program that brings goats to help treat a variety of needs. Their abilities can range from clearing lots of low brush, address vegetation problems, replace mowing in grasslands, reduce flood potential, control weeds, and more.

For the Metro West Fire Protection District, the “50 hardworking goats are clearing about an acre per week, munching their way through the undergrowth which needs to be removed every several years to keep the prairie healthy and thriving.”

While Missouri has a few different affiliates on the Kansas City side, this new affiliate is the first for the St. Louis area, which is covering parts of Wildwood, Chesterfield, St. Charles, and St. Louis City.

Beyond the fun of watching the goats, they do serve as a beneficial resource compared to chemicals and power equipment, which can release harmful fossil fuels and CO2 into the air or turn into runoff.
